Brewing beer with all the taste, without the environmental impact

About us

The history

In 2019, our founder, Lawrence Bunning, was lucky enough to be able to combine his passion for beer, with space on his family farm to launch Hatherland Brewery. Having worked as a manager in licenced trade for many years, then completing the IBD course, he set to, building our state of the art microbrewery in the old dairy shed in the farmyard at Hatherland Mill.

The beer

It all began with Sand Martin, our flagship beer. This light pale ale is perfect for drinking on long days in the Devon sunshine, or in a country pub, warming yourself by the fire. We named it after our favourite birds on the farm which nest in the bank of the River Exe, about 50m from our brewery. In the summer months they can be seen soaring high in the valley, swooping down over the river.

The environment

Growing up in the Exe Valley, we are passionate about our local environment. The farmland is a County Wildlife Site and the brewery is an integrated part of the whole farm. Water for the beer is from a bore hole so exceptionally fresh and great for brewing. Our energy is sourced from solar panels on our brewery roof and heat from our wood chip boiler. Wood chips are produced from coppicing trees on the farm which is vital to maintain our important habitats. Waste from the brewing process is used to feed our prize-winning rare breed cattle.
